With inflation out of control and food prices reaching new heights, you have to be creative these days to save a buck or two and still have a happy, healthy household!

Today beruby is sharing some great ways that you can save on your next trip to the grocers.

  1. Plan your meals in advance. Planning ahead can help you avoid impulse shopping and limiting your trips to the grocery store will help to save time and money.
  2. Check your newspapers for the items that are on sale for the week and try to design your weekly menu around a few choice and reduce prided items.
  3. Create a list so that you don’t spontaneously add impulse items to your cart.
  4. Bring a calculator and pay attention to multiple deal advertisements.
  5. Stock up on the items you need when they are at their lowest price but keep in mind they will probably go on sale again at another time. With that in mind, do you really think you need 12 cans of corn?
  6. Determine the way you can combine coupons with other deals such as store discounts, double coupons or buy one, get one free deals. Use grocery coupons at stores that have the items you need, already on sale.
  7. Pick up the Sunday newspaper! 75% of grocery coupons are hidden inside.  You can also take advantage of the electric coupons that the store issues when you use your discount card.  If you don’t have a card — what are you waiting for?
  8. Grocery stores also offer some of their best deals and printable coupons directly on their websites.

Use your beruby account to visit coupons.com and EARN $0.13 when you print them out!

You Are What You Eat!

FOOD — We all need it to survive, and some of us love to eat it.  I for one am a self proclaimed FOODIE.  If I wasn’t writing this blog for you today, more than likely I would be in the kitchen!

I am not just any FOODIE though, I am a vegan and have not eaten animal products for the last eight years.  Living in Spain, it comes as a surprise to many because veganism is not something akin to the culture here. Most of the dishes are based around meat and fish, as well as ham.  Needless to say, wherever I go, if there is a need to eat, there are limited options and a flood of questions regarding my diet, my dietary needs, etc., etc.

Being vegan however has a lot of benefits both socially, environmentally, and personally.  Most prominently if you maintain a balanced diet, you will find that you are awarded the health benefits of not being sick as frequently, if at all.  I can’t tell you the last time I had a cold, flu, etc.

In 2008, a documentary film was released about the relation of food, nutrition and well being.  the film, Food Matters, suggests that a selective diet can play a key role in treating a range of health conditions such as diabetes, cancer, heart disease and depression without the need of medical treatment.  The film promotes veganism and a raw food diet as well as treatments with vitamins and herbs as opposed to pharmaceutical medication.

Sound interesting? If so, you can now watch the movie using from your beruby account!!  Additionally, you will have access to a variety of health resources including action plans that can help fight against diseases, promote weight loss and mental health and well being, and more!

Check it out! Open your mind and improve your health all at the same time! Right now Food Matters is offering you 15% OFF all their DVD’s when you use code: XM15FM Plus receive 20% in cash back savings when you purchase from Food Matters using your beruby account!

Happy Hollandaise!

Posted on 16-04-2012 | 0 comments

April 16th is National Eggs Benedict Day! There are plenty of silly holidays out there, any excuse to celebrate! But, we are pretty sure this one takes the cake — or English muffin!

Eggs-630x472As legend has it… some guy by the name of Benedict, a fancy wall street broker staying in the Waldorf Hotel, woke up one morning with a sizable hangover, with a craving for greasy comfort food.   Mr. Benedict, fuzzy headed and not feeling 100%,  carried himself down to the hotel’s breakfast buffet where he proceeded to order up some buttered toast, poached eggs, crisp bacon, and a side of hollandaise…

The maître d’ thought this combo sounded pretty tasty and would be a perfect addition to the Sunday brunch menu.  Eggs Benedict was immediately added to the Waldorf breakfast and luncheon menus, but not before the ham was substituted for bacon and an English muffin replaced the toast.

Since the 1900’s, there has been a variety of ways Eggs Benedict has been created — here are a few from Wikipedia worth sharing!

  • Veggie Benedict, also known as California Benedict, replaces the bacon with avocado and tomato.
  • Irish Benedict replaces the ham with corned beef hash or Irish bacon.
  • Pennsylvania-Dutch Benedict replaces the ham or bacon with scrapple. Popular in the eastern region of Pennsylvania.
  • Eggs Benedict Arnold replaces the English muffin with a biscuit and the hollandaise with country gravy, and also cooks the poached egg longer, so that the yolk is fully cooked.
  • Eggs Pope Benedict substitutes German pumpernickel bread for the muffin and German bratwurst sausage for the bacon. It was created when Benedict XVI became pope in 2005.
  • Goose Benedict was invented by James Delingpole. It consists of goose fat spread on an English muffin, with a fried goose foie gras stuffed with black truffle and black pudding, topped with a gull’s egg Hollandaise sauce.
  • Huevos Benedict replaces the English muffin with a twice-folded warm corn tortilla, and the ham with avocado. Also, salsa roja and cilantro are added on top of the hollandaise sauce.
  • Eggs Frederick substitutes tomato ketchup for hollandaise sauce.
  • No Eggs Benedict! Click here for a vegan version of the famous recipe!

Hey Jelly Bean Head!

colorful_jelly_beans-2649

With Easter is right around the corner beruby has its mind on Jelly Beans!!!

Jelly Beans, the candy associated with Easter because of its egg like shape, were spawned from the chewy Middle Eastern treats called Turkish Delights.  Jelly Beans first found their popularity in the United States when Boston candy maker, William Schrafft, encouraged people to send his jelly beans to Union soldiers.  Jelly beans became a wide-spread American treat in the early 20th Century.  Jelly Beans became the first “bulk candy” to be sold by weight, and earned a place in candy history in both music and politics.

American fans would throw jelly beans onstage at Beatles concerts, and Ronald Reagan used jelly beans to help him stop smoking. Gourmet Jelly Bean Manufacturer, Jelly Belly, actually made Reagan his own Blueberry Jelly Belly Bean.

Be sure to shop at Jelly Belly this Easter Holiday and don’t forget to stock up for National Jelly Bean Day, which is April 22 and receive up to 8% in cash back savings!
