beruby is here to PUMP you UP!

Posted on 16-09-2011 | 5 comments

Admittedly I am a self proclaimed health nut, I am addicted to fitness and an all around gym rat. Needless to say, when I was searching for today’s new advertiser, I came across iTrain and thought this is a perfect way to start the blog beginning with the letter I!

Now, I myself look forward to getting up early and hitting the gym 5-6 times a week, but I am quite aware that I am a minority. The majority of my friends would rather sleep in and completely dread going to overcrowded, overpriced fitness centers at any time of day let alone the crack of dawn!

I myself have a much harder time motivating myself to workout in the comfort of my own home although I there have been various occasions when I turn my bedroom into a workout room and get my heart pumping with a few squats, push ups, etc.

According to the American Psychological Association the main reason why people don’t start exercise programs is due to time and feelings of insecurity. Traveling to the gym takes time out of the day and for many, is inconvenient. Additionally, many people are worried about what they look like in front of others.

Fitness training at home is, ultimately, all about convenience and for many its a relief not having to hassle with waiting your turn to squeeze out a quick set on the exercise equipment or machines, and not having to feel intimidated by the super fit, and sometimes oversized gym freaks looking to size you up. The nice thing about working out at home is you don’t have to worry about what you are wearing, you could exercise in your underwear if you want!

funny_exercise_gift_mousepad-p144983092756615517trak_400Ultimately, adhering to a fitness program is all about motivation. I personally like to eat and go out with friends. My rationale is that if I work out hard a few times a week I can afford to indulge in the (not-so) finer things in life — eating bread, sneaking a bit of chocolate here and there , having an extra glass of wine….

Being lazy is definitely easier, but just taking 15 minutes out of the day to exercise can do more for your body than one might think. Exercising stretches and contracts your muscles while stimulates breathing, improving your blood circulation and lung function.

Exercise eventually becomes habit forming. If you are anything like me, not exercising for a day or two will drive you nuts and cause you to feel guilty. Consider that to be newly found motivation and inspiration.

Get all the benefits of using iTrain to exercise at home: Not only is it convenient, you don’t have to drive anywhere, get dressed up, you have your own private shower and everything you need from workouts to instruction is available through the excellent programs, PDF’s and videos on iTrain.

relationship banner 2

Whenever I have my doubts or need to discuss the hurdles of life I am faced with, there is no better person to turn to than my mother. Without fail, she is always there for me, to lend an ear, and push me along, telling me not to worry, things are bound to get better. Sometimes though, I seek other sources for inspiration, especially when I feel like chatting about relationships and dating. Although I comfortable talking about these things with my mother, speaking about my more intimate affairs with others comes more naturally. Then there are times when a non-biased opinion comes in handy. Someone or something that can come along, open your eyes and show you an entirely new perspective in dealing with problems be it physical or emotional.

In today’s world there is hardly any shortage of self help books, magazine articles, workshops, websites and e-zines offering their advice on a wide variety of topics including sex, love and relationships. There are billions of people, with billions of opinions, ready to give out relationship advice; what a relationship should be like, how to fix a relationship, and how much you should put up with in a relationship.

relationshipsAlthough the advice differs, it allows us to get a different perspective on our relationships. When I ask my mother for her perspective I can guarantee it will be different from my girlfriends perspective or a therapists. No matter where you seek your source you are bound to get unique opinions that can be applied to you situation. Non-biased opinions are strait forward and too the point not taking into consideration your feelings or how sensitive you might be to the information or criticism whereas your mother or your friend, might tend to sugar coat things, telling you what you want to hear.

G is for Guiness…

Posted on 14-09-2011 | 4 comments

Although I am not a beer drinker myself, I have a certain appreciation for Guinness. After having been to Ireland on several occasions, I grew to appreciate the art and advertising campaigns behind the brewing company that began at St. James Gate in Dublin during the 18th century. Since then, Guinness has become synonymous with Ireland. Made of roasted malted barley, hops, yeast, and water, Guinness is a dark, velvety ruby red color, brewed in over 150 different countries and over 1.8 billion pints are sold annually.

Arthur Guinness & Sons chose the harp symbol to pay homage to their Irish homeland. The harp, also appears on the back of all of the Irish coins however, it faces to the right whereas the Guinness Harp, faces left.

guinness-is-good-for-youThe “Guinness is Good For You” advertising campaign began in the 1920’s after market research studies claimed that people felt good after drinking a pint of Guinness (although I don’t find that too surprising as Guinness is an alcoholic beverage). Researchers claimed that Guinness could be beneficial to the heart, due to the antioxidant compounds it contained which were similar to those found in certain fruits and vegetables and helped to slow down the deposit of harmful cholesterol on the artery walls. With that being said, perhaps Guinness IS good for you, after all!

In fact, Guinness has a number of redeeming qualities. It is low in calories (198 calories per pint), high in iron content and according to the experts from the University of Wisconsin, a pint of Guinness a day has a similar effect to aspirin as it assists in preventing heart clots.

A “proper” pint of Guinness should be poured in “Guinness Time” which should take approximately 119.5 seconds and served at 6 degrees Celsius or 42.8 Fahrenheit. Only three quarters of a pint should initially be poured at a 45 degree angle and then left to settle. Once the head has fully formed, then glass can be topped off.

As a vegan however, I personally would never drink a Guinness (not to mention I don’t like the taste of beer). However, the Guinness production process involves the use of isinglass which is made from fish. Isinglass is a form of collagen used mainly for the clarification of wine and beer, settling out the suspended matter in the vat or barrel. Although isinglass mainly settles to the bottom of the container it is used in, it’s possible that minute quantities can be carried over into the bottle of beer or wine.

F is for Feeling Fabulous and Looking Great!

How often do you wake up to your alarm clock buzzing and hit the snooze button over and over again? When you do finally muster up the energy to crawl out of bed and grab your toothbrush, are you confronted with a puffy faced wildebeest formally known as you?

So many of us wake up tired, sluggish and dreading the day ahead but, it is important to feel good physically and mentally helping the day to pass more positively. Being fabulous is being in touch with your beauty, sensuality, passion, and kindness; becoming an irresistible magnet, a person people want to be around.

How do you go from fair to FABULOUS???

Here are some simple things you can do to help you feel fabulous every day:

  • Instead of starting your day off to a buzzing alarm, try waking up to the radio or your favorite song. It can really help to put your in the right space.
  • Treat your body to a bit of daily exercise. get some exercise. Move around, do some Yoga stretches, put on a little music and dance around. Get your blood flowing and help to kick start your metabolism. You might even have second thoughts about munching on that morning muffin or bag of chips later in the day.
  • DONT FORGET TO START your day SITTING DOWN AT THE TABLE to eat a healthy breakfast. Skipping breakfast or inhaling a snack bar while driving is no way to feel fabulous. Breakfast is the crucial meal of the dat – it’s your fuel. Additionally, eating at a table will allow you to slow down and pay more attention to what you’re eating. Remember its better to eat healthy, small, and frequently.
  • Wear clothes you feel fabulous in. Dress in a way that makes you feel great. Wear clothes that you feel fabulous in.
  • Think positive! Destiny is in your hands. How you view the world is up to you. If you are looking at the cup half empty, change the way you choose to see things.
  • Love yourself and the others around you. It breeds positive energy!
  • … and Smile! If you make a conscious effort to smile it will help to reduce stress and improve your mood. It’s an easy way to feel fabulous any hour of the day. Feeling fabulous is all about feeling good, empowered and alive.
  • Feeling fabulous can also require a bit of boost to the immune system, especially with the fall and winter seasons approaching.
  • Herbal remedies can help to keep viruses, infection and illnesses at bay without having to resort to doctor visits. Supplement your diets with Echinacea, Garlic, Omega 3’s, Manuka Honey, Pau D’arco, Vitamins and minerals that are rich in C, D, E, zinc and selenium.
  • Some even opt to feel fabulous by faking it. Maintaining your tan from a can or using a lotion can keep you and your skin looking freshly sun-kissed and fabulous!
  • You can even find fabulousness in a tall drink of water and a good nights sleep.

These are just some of the ways to fight looking washed out in the wee morning hours and throughout your day.

A Books Worth—

Posted on 12-09-2011 | 0 comments

The beruby A to Z is back for week two… beginning with E — E is for eBooks!

Aside from being the clearly more environmentally conscious way of reading, the digital format is becoming the norm and changing the way we read — but is it for better or for worse?

Over five hundred years ago, society was asking a similar question when Johannes Gutenberg invented movable type which transformed reading and gave people the ability to spread the gospel around the world far easier than what had ever been imaginable. Today, with a simple click of a button anyone, anywhere can access any book, document, literary article, news blog, etc — but is this digital enhancement beneficial or does it come with its disadvantages?

I am torn in my own opinion. I am pro environment and am pleased when we can do our part to cut down on unnecessary waste, but at the same time there is something more intimate about having a book in hand. Even when I am studying or reading journal articles I prefer to have something tangible in my hand, if only so that I am able to highlight it, make mental notes or dog ear the page so that I can come back to it at a later date.

As the scroll turns?

Scrolling versus turning the page: eBooks are designed to be scrolled through whereas the pages in a printed book need to be turned.

Upside: eBooks however permit us to digitally search millions of books instantly and easily find the information
Downside: It’s more difficult to jump from place to place in long documents. Therefore, if you want to re-read some thing or go back to it, you have to search and scroll for it.

Codex, the format used for the printed books we are all familiar with were designed to be compact and sturdy, ease to use as reference and economical. Additionally, the printed book has a specific uniqueness ,in the sense that reading on paper allows the person to experience the material in a different manner one they cannot get from a movie, the TV, music or video games.

Linear versus digital?

Upside: When you are online, you can click from one blog post to another, scan email threads, and sample, comment and share online news articles
Downside: The span of your attention has most likely shrunk to only scan headlines and what readily stands out. You begin to think in 140 characters or less. You read faster only picking up and paying attention to fragments here and there, with little to no concentration on the language, losing the descriptive narrative and the beautiful essence of the language. Writers face the pressure of having to hook their readers immediately.

When you have a book in your hand however, more than likely you are sitting down, focused and engaged in the narrative or argument.

What the ebook phenomenon does allow avid reading enthusiasts to do is access a novel, magazine, or other source in a push of a button. It makes it much easier and cheaper to buy books, but at the same time does it make it easier to stop reading them? We must not forget, in this digital realm, that the printed book is a primary source of information, and while now we possess terabytes of information, we cannot allow ourselves to drift further away from the enjoyment and appreciation of reading a printed source.

The Fruitcake of Halloween

Posted on 09-09-2011 | 3 comments

Normally, C is for cookie but, with Halloween right around the corner C is for Costumes and Candy!

Less than two months away from one of my favorite holidays — HALLOWEEN — a day in which dressing scandalous and outrageous is encouraged and collecting as much candy as you can is heavily promoted.

Man o man, I remember digging for days in my little plastic jack o lantern for all of my favorite sugar filled morsels of delicious goodness, while my teeth tingled in sweet ecstasy!

The candy most closely related to Halloween is none other than Candy Corn. Candy Corn, has recently been declared one of the worst things to pass out to neighboring treak-or-treaters however, I disagree. In fact, there was always something fun in carefully, and methodically biting off each block of the sugary, artificially colored, triangular shaped candy.

YouTube Preview Image

Designed to look like a kernel of corn (although I beg to differ) and popular with farmers everywhere, Candy Corn hit the Halloween scene in the 1880’s when the Philadelphia based Wunderlee Candy Company began manufacturing it. Twenty years later, it was sold to the Goelitz Candy Company, better known as Jelly Belly, where it is still in production today and made in a similar manner, using all the finest ingredients: made sugar, corn syrup, artificial coloring and binders — DELICIOUS! Suprisingly, a cup of candy corn has fewer calories than a cup of raisins — 3.57 calories per kernel!

Back in the day, candy corn was made by hand. The ingredients were combined, cooked and then fondant and marshmallows were added for texture. The mixture was heated and poured into molds in three stages, giving the candy the three distinct colors it is known for.

candy_corn_dancing_lg_whtAccording to the National Confectioners Association, 35 million pounds of candy corn are produced every year, almost 9 billion pieces (almost enough to circle the moon nearly four times if laid kernel to kernel).

Be sure to mark your calendars and get the Candy Corn ready! October 30th is National Candy Corn Day! Although Halloween accounts for 75% of Candy Corn production, the tri-colored Kernals have evolved from just being a Halloween classic. During Thanksgiving you can find “Indian Corn” (brown, orange and white) as well as Christmas, Easter and Valentines Day varieties.

Today’s letter is the letter B. B is for beruby (of course) but B is also for!

Art-And-Its-HistoryThis weekend I am taking part in a collaborative effort to collage a wall in the house of a friend of mine. I thought it was a pretty novel idea actually — inviting a group of friends over to leave their mark in a creative, fun and inspiring way. I should probably do something similar, as my walls are pretty naked as well;

I have nothing hanging on my walls currently, I could use a few prints and frames so that I could hang a few pictures up, and make my room the cozier place it should be.

A bare wall does not bother me, but it is always more fun to have an extension of your personality hanging in the balance…

At you can do just that — find a gigantic selection of cool and crazy prints and posters that can display your personality on any surface!

Search through more than 250,000 works from the most obscure to the well-known in over 50 categories, such as fine art, decorative art, landscapes, sports, still life, animals, sports and celebrities. You can even have frame and mount the artwork for you so all you have to do is hang it up the moment it arrives at your door.

Check them out — right here on berubythe only place you ever need to BE!

(Wo)Men of means by no means

Posted on 05-09-2011 | 3 comments

Its that time of year! The end of summer — the last chance to gather the whole family and take them out to the lake or nearby for an outdoor barbeque! The majority of us, like to take this final summer weekend to take the family on a little mini-vacation and there is no better way to end the summer than taking the family on a vacation in an RV!

Although with current gas prices one might not think that taking an RV would be the most economical way to travel however, a typical family RV vacation can actually costs less than a traditional vacation once you spend money gassing up your car or buying airline, train or cruise ship tickets, hotels, etc., etc. Not to mention that when you pile the whole gang in an RV, you create the ultimate bonding experience.

'KOOLEST RV MOMENT' PHOTO CONTEST WINNERThe costs for using a motorhome, whether you own one or rent one, are almost identical when you consider the rental/campsite fees and cooking at home compared to the costs of traveling by car, paying for motels and eating out. When traveling around in an RV, you have your accommodation with you.; you don’t have to search for a place to eat and drink, rest, change your clothes, or sleep and nothing beats sitting in a comfortable chair at a table, reading a book or eating a sandwich while someone else is doing the driving!

So what are you waiting for? Today YOU can be KING (or QUEEN) of the road and experience total freedom, flexibility and fun!
